Text from the original notice … In l951 a decision was made in France, to build new types of transport planes. The manufacturing engineer Pierre Satre, aged 46, can be called the father of the " Caravelle" as he with the assistance of his drawing office designed the airplane which was to become the ambassador of the French aeronautical genius. First of all, for safety purposes, the engineers wanted the engines to be installed, as far as possible from the fuel stored in the wing, so that fire protection should be almost complete. This design eliminates the engines from the proximity of the wing which is free of protrusions and aerodynamically clean like that of a glider and increases the efficiency in performance.
