CHARLES DE GAULLE SERIE GIANT
CHARLES DE GAULLE
In spite of the big number of details and pieces, and the size of the model, the assembly will be easy and the decoration simple to achieve.
The R-91 Charles de Gaulle, with its 300 km of manifolds and piping, 1300 km of cable, 200 computer terminals and 1000 telephone links for internal communication, is a full air base in a reduced space 260 m long and 65 m wide, enabling 40 planes to be deployed.
More than 10,000 plans were drawn up by engineers from the Direction des Constructions Navales (Shipbuilding Directorate) to construct this aircraft carrier. It has a system of twelve 22 ton mobile masses which compensate for the rolling movements and enable the ship to use its aircraft on board when sea conditions are force 5 or 6. The forms of the Charles de Gaulle are "furtive" to reduce its radar signature and make it more difficult to identify.
The first operational engagement of the Charles de Gaulle was the Héraclès mission, during which, between 1 December 2001 and 1 July 2002, the aircraft carrier traveled the equivalent distance of 3 times around the Earth.
