The first model took off on May 5, 1956 from Melun-Villaroche airfield , piloted  by Gerard Muselli. The SMB2 went into production as a remplacement for Mystery IVB.

The first model took off on May 5, 1956 from Melun-Villaroche airfield , piloted  by Gerard Muselli. The SMB2 went into production as a remplacement for Mystery IVB. It was the first European production aircraft to go supersonic in level flight and to carry air to air missiles in addition to conventional cannon and rockets. It was in production from 1957 to 1959.
